Bush Derides Kerry as Man of Few Achievements
A mistake. This type of tactic didn't work for George I when that upstart from the Ozarks burst on the national scene and it won't work here either.

It's all about Ohio
Which, of course, is as it should be.

Dead squirrel thought to be cause of courthouse stench
Oh, really? You think so?
The best part of the article is how they thought the smell would go away once they found and removed the dead bat, but somehow that just didn't seem to do it.

Thank God the Democratic Convention is over.
CNN.com is my homepage and for the past week the convention dominated the page. Every leading banner, every leading headline was convention-related. Even this one:
It'll be interesting to see if the Republicans get the same shake.

What you don't want to hear your plumber say
"Huh, that's weird. Well, I guess I'm gonna have to go get the sledgehammer."
In other words, I'm going to be offline for the rest of the afternoon.

This is way cool.
The Living Room Candidate presents televised campaign commercials from every presidential election going back to 1952.

It's cage-match time!
Here's some match-ups I think might be fun to see:
Democrats for Bush pitted against Republicans Against Bush.
Smart money here is on the Dems. The Republicans have gone all soft and will probably spend the first few minutes of the match looking around for some trees to hug, while the Democrats will cold-heartedly destroy their opponents and then sing "God Bless America" while standing over the smoking remains.
Teens for Bush vs. Kids Against Bush.
Gotta go with the teens, if only because they are older and have developed more of their major muscle groups. Six noogies and one flying wedgie into the match, the KABs will throw in the towel.
Librarians Against Bush vs. Blogs for Bush.
Librarians, obviously. A bunch of pasty, Internet-addicted bloggers, vs. librarians? The librarians will lay the smack down so fast the bloggers' heads will spin. Come on, folks. Stephen King even wrote a horror story about librarians. Librarians are scary. The bloggers have no chance.
Disqualified from competition are: Patriots for Bush, because as a professional football team, they have an unfair advantage, and also Expats Against Bush, because in case nobody told these guys, they are expats and cannot vote so it's kind of irrelevant whether they are pro or against Bush, don't you think?
Next week: Vice presidential smackdown, aka "I've got your bucket of warm spit right here!"

This Land is My Land
Ed is wrong. There are plenty of examples of calm, rational discussions of issues. Here's an example right here.

Just how stupid are these people?

Commercials I Hate
"I started this site in 1997 because the advertising industry thinks we're stupid. Commercials assume the worst about us. Commercials use ugly stereotypes to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
That's nasty and insulting. Lucky for you, my reader, so am I."

Conversational Cheap Shots
In my years on the Internet, I have seen nearly every one of these tactics employed in online debate. It's incredibly rare to find people capable of intelligent, thoughtful discourse who don't resort to shady debate tactics in order to win an argument. (In "real life" as well as on the 'net, of course; it's just more noticeable online because of the sheer volume.)

Beijing is sinking
And so, apparently, are several other major Chinese cities. And you thought your city had problems. Experts blame receding ground waters, caused by excessive pumping of ground water, exploration of geothermal resources, and large-scale construction, particularly high-rise construction. The Chinese are swearing up and down that the problem is not going to affect the 2008 Olympics, scheduled for Beijing, but things don't look too sunny, from a geological standpoint. (Actually, they look kind of rocky, so to speak. HA HA HA.)

Human chain protest accomplishes...
...well, not all that much, actually. It looks awfully cool, though.
When I first read the headline, I assumed it was some kind of anti-Iraq protest here in the United States, but in fact it turns out to be a story from Israel. One telling piece of information from the article:
Organizers expected up to 150,000 Israelis to form the human chain, about the same number as participated in a pro-withdrawal demonstration in Tel Aviv two months ago.

Pol sighting
Ohio, a swing-state in this election, is being heavily fought over, with the action even hitting Hooterville next week as Kerry will be here and Bush will be one town over. As we rolled into the Big City today I noticed the other side of the freeway was closed to regular traffic. Wave after wave of motorcycle cops rolled past. Overhead a copter was circling, and all the overpasses were blocked. "One of the Big Four must be in town," someone concluded, and, indeed, it was Kerry. I was struck by his vulnerability. Despite all the security in the world, he was just another guy zipping down I-70.
