When you're a disgruntled employee...

...and you want to threaten somebody with an assault rifle...

it's important to carefully choose your target.

Cuba pursues a 120-year-old future

There's a good chance that Fidel Castro, who marks his 78th birthday Friday, could keep going for another 40 years, the Cuban leader's personal physician says.

Translating communist propaganda this means he won't make it another two years.

R.I.P. Julia Child

Every other blog in the known universe has already linked to this, but I don't care. How could you not love this woman:

"I think these fake foods aren't worth eating," she said in 1992. "Either have the real thing and a little of it or have something else. I like real hamburgers and real meat, real butter. Eat everything. Have fun."

Moore lawyer responds to newspaper complaint

Remember the headline from Fahrenehit 9/11 that read "Latest Florida recount shows Gore won election" ?

It was altered. In both font and size. And Moore changed the date, moving it back 2 weeks.

Technically, Moore is right...the alterations "did not make a difference to the editorial point," except that it undermines credibility, something Moore doesn't seem to care about.

Some people...

Here's an interesting idea.

This has started a rather lively discussion on a couple of discussion boards I'm on, but I was wondering what ya'll thought of it.

Granted, the idea of a federal sales tax at 23 - 30% is a little scary at first; however, when you look at the fact that it has exemptions up to the povery line and eliminates all other Federal Taxes, it looks like a good idea to me.

Scientists: T. rex lived fast, died young

Yep, I'd say that pretty much sums up Mark Bolan's life allright.

NationaHighway tiff threatens Canada-EU trade deal

Need a login/password?

The outer belt, 407, around Toronto is a toll road that was recently sold to a Spanish consortium. A foreign company owning a toll road?
This is something that would never happen in the States. The last time I was up there, my sister who was living there for a few years steered me towards the 407, stating "go ahead and use the private freeway. There's very little traffic and, as a Yank, they'll never track you down since they don't have toll booths. Instead they take photos of each car and mail the bill to the driver."

She was right. We never got a bill. Thanks, Canada.

Replacing Wrigley Field?!

After having watched the execrable demolition of Seattle's not-so-beloved Kingdome back in 1999, I'm not sure I can take this.

Don't panic; it's still in the earliest planning stages, if you can even call it that, but I'm readying my howls of outrage in advance. You can never be too prepared. (Need a login/pw?)

Do not taunt Happy Fun Hogweed

If you live in Michigan, there's a plant you should watch out for:

"Avoid it at all costs. Do not pick it, do not touch it, contact the Department of Agriculture," said Cygan, invasive species coordinator for the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture. He described it as likely the most dangerous plant in the state.

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! It's giant hogweed! AAAAAGH!

A New Type of Eye Candy

I used to think that somewhere in the not-too-distant future, it would no longer be possible - or at least, it would be very difficult - for teenagers and anti-establishment types to shock the rest of the world. Piercings, tattoos, clothing, nudity, music, movies - been there done that, nothing left. I should've remembered imagination has no bounds, as this link
shows!

Geeks unite!

There is college scholarship money for you! If you speak Klingon, or are willing to go to your prom dressed in duct tape, that is. And this is apparently the tip of the iceberg.

Plains Gone Wild

A storm chaser's website with some pretty cool images and first-hand accounts. There are some really fantastic pictures if you dig around a little bit. Not counting the oddly detailed photojournalistic account of the guy's most recent beer party, I mean.

Back from vacation!

We are back....had a wonderful, glorious week on the South Carolina beach....but it was very, very hard-fought....

--Upon leaving for S. Carolina, a 12 hr drive, in the middle of a fierce electrical storm and in the dark with a car full of antsy kids, I drove like mad up into the garage to turn off the forgotten light....forgetting that the fully-loaded turtle shell was atop the car...clearance w/o the shell is but one inch....to the shock and horror of all, I sheared that baby right off.

the 2nd time i've done that in the past 3 years!

--oldest child Mary and her fiance Steve broke down in Western Carolina and were told they would have to wait 2 days to get their car repaired....they were spared when a "lil, squat dude with a cigar stopped on the side of the freeway and said, after surveying the damage: "I know I can git that with my chain!" And he did...yanking the entire exhaust system off with a whack that Steve said sounded "just like a gunshot!"

--I won't even go into how I stabbed myself in the calf, later in the week, keeping me out of the water the last day!

Anyway, we had a fabulous time and I'll put up photos during the week, starting with this, my favorite...

How to make the wrong point

I can think of better ways to "make a statement on these type of videos and how easily they can be faked" than taping your own beheading. No wonder this guy wasn't elected - who needs another immature politician?

Unwanted Patients

Meeks sent in the following link with this comment: "Mrs. Proctor's son is a very very dear friend of mine who I love as a brother from the bottom of my heart - and it sickens me that this is happening to her." I agree, Meeks. While some might argue that there is no such thing as a 'right' to medical care, this article is still a sad commentary on the state of health care anywhere.
