only $999
--486 SX, 25 MHZ, 4 MB Ram, 100 MB HD, 3.5 Drive and a 5.25 Drive, WIndows 3.1, Dos 5 and a Mouse.
only $1399
--Microsoft Ballpoint Mouse: clip it onto your computer.

I don't care how good it is for you...
This just goes to prove, yet again, that almost everything the ancients ever said was totally wrong.

I guess all that jogging can only help so much.

CNN
Remember me musing about whether CNN would trumpet the Republican Convention as much as they did the Democratic one?
Headlines from the Democratic meeting ran at the top of CNN's home page for an entire week. No other story outranked it. As expected, they have not followed suit for Bush and Company, putting Florida's preparations for Frances at the top of the page at the time of this posting.

Cheney Praises Bush as Decisive Leader
What a spectacularly awful headline. This ranks right up there with a Chicago Tribune headline I saw one day:
Politicians Found to be Corrupt
What?! Surely not politicians! And in Chicago, no less!!
An entire day's worth of convention coverage to summarize, and the headline writer chooses to go with "Cheney Praises Bush". Well, tell us something we don't know, Sherlock.

Earth becoming invisible to aliens
Apparently cable TV is making it so that the Earth isn't broadcasting nearly as many radio transmissions out into the ether as it used to be, thus making it less likely that alien life forms who are listening for radio waves will find us.
I have two thoughts about this. First, who says the aliens are using radio technology anyway? Maybe the aliens are just a hyper-intelligent shade of the color blue and communicate via sense of smell. And do we really want an alien civilization to contact us after they've seen a bunch of old Baywatch and My Mother, the Car reruns? We'd better just all hope they don't have death rays.
Second, this makes it official; we are the only people left in America who do not have cable TV.

Philly Considers Wireless Internet for All,
This is too good to be true.
Apparently they have a modified version of this up in Cleveland, where the fellow who is spearheading that effort says "We like to say it should be like the air you breathe — free and available everywhere. We look at this like PBS or NPR. It should be a public resource."
Not to pick nits, but how does he figure PBS and NPR are free? The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which directs PBS, gets about 25% of its revenues from taxes. Couple that with the endless fund drives and I'd hardly call those systems "free."
That being said, a rise in taxes to cover the cost of free wireless would mean an overall savings for those who use broadband and would also mean a step up in service for those who still use dial-up.

Almost too ironic to contemplate
A work of art -- and I use the term loosely -- intended to represent "the finite nature of art" in the form of a bag of garbage, was thrown away by a janitor at the art museum.
You'd think the artist would be overjoyed that someone finally truly understood his work.

The NY Times Obituary of Indian Larry
It was only a matter of time before a reality show claimed its first victim, yet I bet they'll get higher ratings whether they show the accident or not.
You can also bet that the Discovery Channel had Indian Larry sign a boatload of indemnity stuff to protect their asses.
Maybe this will mark the beginning of the end for this stupid genre.

Older is Better!
Having had to endure a recent spate of "We're smarter/better/stronger/faster than you are" from the younger generation, I can't help but feel a certain sort of perverse satisfaction in this article. Time to break out the running shoes!

The Journal of Materials reviews movies!
I'm not kidding. JOM's Top 10 movies featuring materials.
Actually kind of a fun list, and also how often do you get to hear this?
What movies rarely do, however, is provide us an opportunity to marvel at the scope and complexity of materials science and engineering.

The GOP doesn't reflect America
The latest from Michael Moore, who's in NYC supposedly to cover the Republican Convention, but who is actually, of course, doing what he does best: pimping Michael Moore. As usual, he sprinkles a few good points in among the many silly and the few funny ones.

My feelings exactly
As usual, John Scalzi says it all:
Not to bag on Glenn, Atrios, Kos too much; they're just my straw men for the state of political bloggery in general at the moment. As I've noted before, I can get as wound up as any of them; but thanks to a short attention span I move on fairly quickly. And perhaps because of my short attention span, I get wildly irritated at people who can't fucking move on. Going into a political blog these days is to be transported into a room of people who get off on smelling their own farts; the musty self-pleasuring scent of people too pleased with the result of their digestions to crack a window and let in some air. Well, mazel tov, kids. Have fun and see you after the election.

Church Says Girl's Communion Not Valid
"An 8-year-old girl who suffers from a rare digestive disorder and cannot eat wheat has had her first Holy Communion declared invalid because the wafer contained no wheat, violating Roman Catholic doctrine."
Before I start ranting about the insensitivity of the Church let's make a quick correction to the opening sentence above. It's not quite correct. It violates doctrine according to this one diocese. Other dioceses, however, are allowing non-wheat wafers.
Now, on to the bashing of Trenton Bishop John M. Smith...Jesus' own words will suffice: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!”

France Will Not Repeal Head Scarf Law
The kidnapping and threatened execution of 2 journalists in Iraq must be really irritating the French today. After standing stubbornly against the US intervention, they still somehow manage to find themselves stuck in the same mess.
