Some geeky proofreading humor

As a sometime proofreader and copy editor, I found this blog entry to be particularly hilarious. Not the bumper sticker per se, which is only mildly amusing at best, but the Photoshopped reader contribution. (Click the "conservative's rebuttal" link towards the bottom of the entry.)

Early poll gives Kerry the edge in final debate

Thank God that's over. I don't which was worse yesterday, two-faced Kerry fondly recalling the Reagan presidency or Bush denying his statement about bin Laden that "I truly am not that concerned about him." Oh, really? Hell, even I recalled his nonchalant write-off.

What's even more repelling, if that's possible, are the company hacks that litter the screen afterwards, the so-called "spin doctors." Each side passionately lying that their candidate had clearly won, their candidate had the better vision, blah, blah, blah. I don't mind the pundits, but who the hell cares what paid hacks have to say? I would have flipped back to the ball game, but the hated Yankees were kicking ass and watching that would even be worse.

Anyway, it's a mad dash now to the first Tuesday in November. Good luck, America.

Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney to record new LP

If they actually had recorded an LP, then that would have been news. Big news. But they're not getting together to record an LP. They'll be releasing a CD and Macca and Wilson are LP people living in a CD world....translated that means only the diehards will care.

U.S. tried twice to rescue hostages

Hmmm...Now where have I heard this before? A first term president, running for re-election and mired in a Middle Eastern hostage crisis...a rescue attempt, prior to the election, that didn't work...The similarities between this election and prior ones are eerie. A liberal from Mass gaining in the polls because his Republican opponent doesn't do televised debates as well is Kerry as Kennedy. The 1st term president, trying to deal with hostages, is Bush as Jimmy Carter and let us not forget that Carter's mishandling directly led to the Reagan era.

I'd like to thank Kay.

Brendan and I have talked about starting columns for a while for The World Oligarchy. And I finally made a decision to run with it, but I couldn't come up with anything, until I read the comment about banning polls.

The first column of Random Variance

Baby victim of identity thief

A 5-month-old infant was billed for walking into a clinic and receiving treatment for a lumbar disc displacement after someone apparently lifted personal information from hospital birth records. This reminds me of the time paranoid relatives on the spousal side got up in arms when they saw their names on a family website and were fearful of identity theft. I was compelled to point out that any time they write out a check for a bill, they're dropping name, address, phone number, bank name, bank account number and bill account number information into the hands of bank tellers, check processors, accounting clerks, and so on - and banks store SS# plus date of birth. Identity theft is hardly limited to the internet.

Buying drugs over the internet

A recent study shows that only a small percentage of Americans are willing to use the Internet to buy prescription drugs. This reminds me of the time when just as few people ordered anything via online due to concerns about the reliability and/or security of such sites. Admittedly, drugs carry a greater risk and when I ordered my son's albuterol via the net the first time, I studied the package with great care before I handed it off to him. For the sake of our aging population, I hope the days of such drug buying skepticism or even concerns go the way of the old internet merchandising concerns soon.
