Kottke.org: Maximum Starbucks density

How many Starbucks are there within a five mile radius of your home?
We don't have any within fifty miles here in Hooterville, but the current record is...well, take a guess and then look at the scary answer.

Super Bowl show vows to keep it clean

Officials have axed the trio "Los Lonely Boys," scheduled to play at an event the night before the game, after the group's drummer was arrested for marijuana possession.

Wait a second....they are keeping the show clean by hiring Paul McCartney as their main act? The same Paul McCartney who was arrested in Japan in 1980 and spent nine days in prison for possession of weed?

The NFL is a deceiving bunch of two-faced liars. Have they disciplined Jamaal Lewis of the Ravens yet? He has been convicted of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute 5 kilos of cocaine and will spend four months in the slammer this spring. But has the NFL done anything other than look the other way? And what about player Leonard Little, who in 1998 drunkenly drove his Navigator, ran a red light and plowed into Susan Gutweiler's car, killing her. He was suspended eight games, folks. Eight games. Oh, by the way, Leonard was arrested again last April for drunken driving and speeding. Did he miss one game this past season? No, because the NFL's policy for drunken driving is to fine the player $20,000. So, do not tell me that the NFL is keeping things clean. They are as dirty as it comes.

WIred News: My IPod, My Self

"Consumers often say the iPod has become part of themselves."
Maybe this article will explain what happened yesterday here at Chez Bobos. Our 16 year old, Steve, called home from schoolin the middle of the day: "Dad, I am so mad, I am shaking. I am going to hit somebody. Somebody stole my Ipod while I was shooting hoops but five feet away. I have been disrespected. Somebody is going to get hurt; I promise you."

I spent about 10 minutes trying to calm him down. Later I drove into the Big City and when I returned that evening my Darling Wife informed me that Steve found his Ipod on the desk in his bedroom!

American 'Office' remake gets premiere date

Frequent Commenter BIL turned us on to the BBC sitcom The Office and my Darling Wife and I watched and loved it, thanks to Netflix. The American version will be aired in two months. I'm not expecting much.

School district cancels spelling bee

Administrators argue that "that a spelling bee doesn’t meet the criteria of all children reaching high standards -- because there can only be one winner, leaving all other students behind."

I guess all Advanced Placement classes should be tossed out as well.

This would not go over well here since our 11 year old Mike has won the school spelling bee for 2 years straight and next Tuesday tries his hand once again in the city-wide spelling bee where he placed third last year.

Wikipedia

I'm not sure how many readers know of Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia which can be edited by anyone. I've included the link to the Johnny Carson entry. In it we discover that Carson got his break filling in for Red Skelton after Skelton knocked himself out one hour before airtime.

Wikipedia's entry for today, January the 27th, shows that seven years ago today Hillary Clinton went on NBC"s Today Show to complain that the the attacks against her husband were part of a "vast right-wing conspiracy."

PostSecrets

An interesting read. People send in postcards, briefly describing their secrets. And they don't have to say any Hail Marys.

My favorite is the one about the dead grandmother, although the adultery fence is pretty cool, too.

And then there are some very sad ones.

'Aviator' Gets 11 Academy Award Nods

I'm disappointed that Paul Giamatti, of Sideways, did not pick up a Best Actor nomination. But it's totally in synch with the type of character Giamatti plays, the intelligent outsider looking in. The film did well otherwise garnering nods for Best Film, Best Director and both Best Supporting Actress and Actor.

Now, on to Michael Moore who got shut out of the nominations as Hollywood tries to kiss up to Washington and middle America. I'm not saying he deserved a nomination, far from it, but had it been last year, I'm sure he would not only have been nominated but would have won handily. Politics may be a dirty game, but you are now too dirty, Mike, even for the Democrats.

And if anyone is feeling even the littlest bit sorry for Moore, check this out.

Entertainers Mourn Johnny Carson

Ah, dilemmas. What to drink, for example: Coke or Pepsi? Or say that you are sitting at an intersection at 5 in the morning and there are no cars anywhere within a mile of you. Do you run the light? America finds itself smack in the middle of a dilemma tonight. Who to watch, Leno or Letterman? Jay inherited Johnny's show and will have the weight of "The Tonight Show" moniker behind him. Letterman, on the other hand, clearly was Carson's favorite of the two and was feeding him jokes for his monologue. I'll go with Letterman.

Your ears will know

aacPlus is the latest online audio streaming format and if you are into that sort of thing, check it out. You will have to install the new, free Winamp player to hear it at its best quality in Windows or the also free VLC Player if you are running via Mac.

What makes aacPlus different is the size of the stream. It's much smaller than the MP3 format which is now the norm for online audio, and that means excellent quality even for dial up. In broadband it has Dolby 5.1 surround-sound capabilities. I installed Winamp yesterday and two people in the house instantly noticed the difference when I started playing Tuners2's Mostly Classical channel. And, the best part is, it's all free.
