John Paul II: 1978-2005
Had to listen to the CNN death watch on the 4.5 hour drive in to Detroit and am sitting now watching MSU-N. Carolina, toasting the Pope for a job excellently done. We'll go to Mass here tomorrow to join the grieving faithful, but right now it's "GO MICHIGAN STATE, BABY!" After all, I'm an alumnus, but never went there. You can't beat that!

Blockbuster settles "No Late Fees" suit
Apparently people who were told there would be no more late fees were a little torqued off when they were charged late fees.
I only have so much sympathy for these people, because what, they thought Blockbuster was handing out free videos now? But I'm glad Blockbuster is changing that stupid advertising campaign.

Woman struck, killed trying to cross freeway
My goodness! What are the odds of a third time? The funeral costs must really be piling up for the family. You'd think she would have learned something the first time, though.

In its never-ending quest to sieze more and more of the market, Google comes up with yet another quirky, attention-grabbing idea.

Half of cancer deaths preventable
But if they were and more people reached a ripe old age, wouldn't the Social Security system run out of money even faster?

Word's grammar check function sucks
I can't actually provide any lengthy quotations from the article without including words that are not appropriate for a family-friendly weblog, but I agree wholeheartedly with everything this guy has to say about Microsoft Word's @#!*&! grammar checker.

The kicker is, it didn't even work.
That William the Conqueror story was pretty nasty, but no, this is definitely the most disgusting thing I've heard all week. Hell, all month.

"It's just that time of year."
The Chicago Tribune's phlegmatic response to the news of a 25-foot-tall inflatable skunk being stolen for, apparently, political purposes. Detectives are currently dusting the $7000 skunk for fingerprints.

For family, religion shapes politics
One can almost imagine MacQuarrie, clothed in a sterile suit, viewing this strange, exotic species through the protective plastic bubble, gloved hands fumbling to make notes.

A special sort of town
A news article about this concept (currently underway in South Dakota) caught my attention primarly because a hearing co-worker has fallen in love with sign language and attends annual camps where no words are vocalized during the entire week-long gathering. Whether Laurents is a good idea is hard to say -- it might motivate, say, towns built around wheelchair users or towns built to accommodate the blind. While this is a nifty (albeit expensive) way to get around the limits of the Disabilities Act, there's potential to turn these people into isolationists.

What about George Felos’ worldview in the Schiavo debate?
Oh. ok, that clears things up. I thought maybe he was just a nutjob or something.

Girl with rare disorder refused communion
Hasn't this come up before? I seem to remember something similiar happening a while ago, but if it did, I never heard of a resolution. Anyone?
