I hate this S.O.B
This is my first entry. I hate this guy so much I asked to be able to post just so I could slam this guy. Mary and I are teachers. This nut claims to be an educator who now is helping other teachers to be "very, very, very, successful." This nut-job perpetuates the idea that teaching is about stupid cartoon cut-outs, answering the questions at the back of a textbook, tracing your hand to make a turkey and covering your classroom with enough clip-art bullshit to choke a horse.
Mary and I had to endure Harry Wong's video collection at the start of the schoolyear last August. It cost $700 for the videos and $300 for all the books the principal bought for the teachers. I would say more about it, but remembering this colossal waste of time has filled me with dread and now I must lay down.

Welcome aboard, Steve! By all means, post more...and just remember: "Inside every great blogger, there is an even greater blogger waiting to come out."

You can lead a horse to clip-art bullshit but canna make him choke.
Posted by: DW at August 3, 2005 02:13 PM
what does that mean???
Posted by: mary at August 3, 2005 08:31 PM
Apparently the recognition of witty repartee isn't covered on the Harry Wong videos.

I am going to treat you to a quote from Harry's book, of which we own 2 copies, forced upon us by mislead administrators:
"Enhancement people are self enhancers."
Here's another one:
"The successful teacher must know and practice the three characteristics of an effective teacher."
One more:
"Will you DECIDE to be a WORKER?
or
Will you CHOOSE to be a LEADER?" (emphasis his)
Anybody want more? I got tons of this stuff.

enhancement people are self-enhancers????
explain, please!
Posted by: Eddie at August 4, 2005 06:38 AM
The explanation is there's a sucker born every minute. And every third sucker is buying Harry Wong materials. Every fourth sucker is taking them seriously.
(Mary, I was referring to Steve's vivid phrase "enough clip-art bullshit to choke a horse".)

Sounds worse than the MTELs my daughter had to take. The study book she was given was full of errors. She was not amused.

I bet Mark Thackeray never had to watch Harry Wong videos. Nosirreebob!

There are 3 types of people in the world: Protective People, Maintenance People, and Enhancement People. Protective People are self-defeating people, Maintenance people are coping people, and Enhancement People are self-enhancers. Got it? No? Well, maybe an example will clarify things.
Enhancement People say things like this:
"We have this support group organized to help each other."
"We got out once a month to a power breakfast and share our successes and problems."
"We have this self-help group, and our purpose is to help mentor the beginning teacher."
"Jan is my support buddy."
Harry would like you to take a close, critical look at yourself. Which Person are you? Remember, "Many people make decisions by deciding," but "LEADERS CHOOSE. Leaders do not decide."

Here is an example of a leader making a powerful choice:
I saw this man speak (not by choice). He came to the stage and gave his spiel for a while. He then told the audience (which were all teachers) that they were part of the the noblest profession. Nice, huh? The lights dimmed, a flowery image appeared on the screen and the Bette Midler song "Wind Beneath my Wings" came on over the speaker system.
This is what I had to spend an afternoon dealing with. A room full of teachers from the inner city who could use this time to swap stories, exchange ideas or anything useful and we had to listen to Bette Midler.
I bet he sold 30 books on that move alone.

Reminds me of the pre-marriage class we had to take where we sat in a circle, joined hands and listened to a Neil Diamond tune. DW knew at that moment how much I had to love her in order to go thru that torture.
Posted by: Eddie at August 4, 2005 12:11 PM
Maybe Harry is looking for the one self-enhancing leader who chooses to stand up during one of these seminars and shout "ENOUGH! This is NONSENSE!" and walk out of the room.

I'M MARY'S SUPPORT BUDDY! YES! Do I get a special badge, or one of those heart-shaped necklaces that says "Friends 4-Ever" that you break in half and I wear one half and you wear the other one? Nevermind, tell me later, I have to go start making friendship pins to stick in our tennis shoes!

You guys have to understand that you are there above all to teach socialist realism. Is it any wonder that your masters use the same indoctrination methods and propaganda employed oh so successfully in the Worker's Paradise throughout the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s?
Be good proles, and stop all the counter-revolutionary hate speech. Shut up and do it their way, or you'll be eliminated.

BIL, you are sadly overestimating the amount of thought and effort that goes into a lot of this crap. As far as I could tell from the education classes I took in college, a lot of "educators", and I am using this term loosely here, come up with one really vague paragraph that means nothing, and then reword that same paragraph dozens of times, thus creating an entire article/motivational speech/textbook.
Posted by: Jan at August 4, 2005 09:01 PM
And how did it get that way, Jan?
Posted by: BIL at August 4, 2005 09:35 PM
Jan, you have to check Wong's book out. It's 4 thoughts worded and reworded 5,067 times. Or so.
