A rare ‚alien‘ NFT has been sold for 605 ETH, or over $850,000!
The market for collectible NFTs shows no sign of slowing down: sales of these tokens at exorbitant prices are now frequent
The market for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) continues to achieve impressive results: a very rare „alien“ CryptoPunks token was sold last Saturday for 605 Ether, which is equivalent to about $850,000.
CryptoPunks is generally considered to be the very first NFT project, as they were released even before the CryptoKitties, which also had the merit of pushing the world of non-fungible tokens Bitcoin Trader into mainstream awareness. The developers of CryptoPunks, Larva Labs, report that the „punks“ have generated a total sales volume of $26 million: in the last year, the average selling price of the punks was $6,199.
Each punk has unique attributes, such as background colour, accessories, and even some ultra-rare features, such as an „alien“ or „zombie“ appearance.
The punk sold today, #2890, is one of nine alien punks in existence
„Punk 2890 was purchased for 605 ETH by 0x24c5eb from 0x6611fe.“
The auction to grab the prized punk was heated throughout last week, so much so that even DeFi whale 0x_b1 had made a 500 ETH bid. The punk in question had last been sold in July 2017 for 8 ETH, meaning the owner got a 75x return on his investment.
The new owners are a group of investors that include FlamingoDAO, which describes itself as „a collective that supports and collects premium NFTs“. FlamingoDAO’s official Twitter account confirmed the purchase with a meme:
A Flamingo spokesperson stated:
„It’s simple: CryptoPunks is an innovative project, it predates the ERC 721 standard and cryptocurrencies. […] Aliens are the rarest form of punk, and we believe the acquired alien will be appreciated by collectors over time and become an iconic piece of digital art.“
Crypto-art collector @gmoneyNFT, who bought Punk for 140 ETH earlier this month, thinks the alien is a good investment despite the skyrocketing valuation:
„I think it was a great buy. As the world moves towards digital, being a ‚punk‘ in a virtual world will be increasingly important. It’s the way humans operate in the physical world. It won’t change in the digital realm.
Despite having long been considered a secondary use case for blockchain technology, sales like this one show that NFTs are just beginning to show their potential. NBA Topshot, a collectible highlight project from Dapper Labs, has proven to be very popular; Axie Infinity’s creatures have also been selling at impressive prices recently.
